NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
In 1977, Claudio Abbado presented Verdi’s Don Carlo in the version in Italian with five acts. The opera, created in five acts in Paris in 1867, made its debut at La Scala in this form the following year; Verdi also reduced it to four acts in 1884 for La Scala, only to return to the extended version in Bologna in 1886. At La Scala before Abbado, this version was also chosen by Arturo Toscanini, Antonino Votto and Gabriele Santini; since this last, nobody. Now, after 40 years, the version with the “Fontainebleau Act” returns to the Piermarini stage with one of the greatest living conductors of Verdi of our time, Myung-Whun Chung, and Peter Stein’s action-focussed directing. A historic fresco and a personal drama, Don Carlo requires six outstanding soloists: singing together at La Scala with the legendary Ferruccio Furlanetto in the role of Filippo will be the magnificent female couple of Krassimira Stoyanova and Ekaterina Semenchuk, and the young, generous voices of Francesco Meli (by now, the go-to tenor for Verdi), Simone Piazzola and Orlin Anastassov.

NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
Verdi referred to the rest home for musicians that he ordered built in Piazza Buonarroti, Milan, as “my most beautiful work”; Damiano Michieletto unites the Maestro’s last two creations and crafts a Falstaff of extraordinary delicacy and humanity. The bitterness and decline of the aristocratic bon vivant are tenderly received within the walls of the Casa, faithfully reproduced by the production designer Paolo Fantini. The podium is entrusted to the sublime elegance of Zubin Mehta and the quintessential Falstaff, Ambrogio Maestri, strides the stage, seduced and hoodwinked by Carmen Giannattasio, Giulia Semenzato and Annalisa Stroppa; Massimo Cavalletti and Francesco Demuro play the roles of Ford and Fenton. Created in Salzburg, the show finds its natural setting under the watchful eye of la Madonnina.

Alfredo Germont / Francesco Meli
Barone Douphol / Costantino Finucci
Marchese D'Obigny / Abramo Rosalen
Dottor Grenvil / Alessandro Spina

NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
The staging is the lavish Liliana Cavani production with scenery by Dante Ferretti with which Verdi’s masterpiece returned to La Scala in 1990 conducted by Riccardo Muti. The leading lady is Anna Netrebko, the most highly acclaimed soprano of the present, who has already triumphed in two First Nights at La Scala: on 7 December 2011 in Donna Anna with Daniel Barenboim and in 2015 in Giovanna d’Arco with Riccardo Chailly. Today she has all the necessary maturity to portray the courtesan in all three stages of her passion. She will alternate with Ailyn Perez. The orchestra will be conducted by Nello Santi, a custodian of the most authentic Italian tradition, who has only conducted at La Scala once before, in 1971. Completing a marvellous cast is Francesco Meli as Alfredo and the great Leo Nucci as Giorgio Germont.
