DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG
Richard Wagner

March 16, 19, 23, 26, 30

Teatro alla Scala Chorus and Orchestra
Opernhaus of Zurich Production
Running Time: 05 hours 30 minutes intermissions included

NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
After Verdi’s bittersweet comedy Falstaff, the 2016/2017 Season presents the high comedy of Wagner: an opportunity to listen to one of the most acclaimed interpretations of Daniele Gatti, committed to drawing attention to the chamber music weft of a brilliant and extremely refined score. Contributing to the musical harvest is a stupendous cast bringing together Michael Volle, the foremost Sachs of our day, and Markus Werba as Beckmesser. The performance is directed by Harry Kupfer, the grand old man of German theatre, who recently regaled audiences at La Scala with Der Rosenkavalier, while the scenery by Hans Schavernoch recreates the atmosphere of the ancient city without taking refuge in simple figurative reproduction.

ANNA BOLENA
Gaetano Donizetti

March 31

Teatro alla Scala Chorus and Orchestra
Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux Production
Running Time: 03 hours 16 minutes intermission included

NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
After its inauguration in 2016 with the noted return of Verismo represented by Giordano’s La cena delle beffe, the project to bring the Italian repertoire back to La Scala in its entirety continues in 2017 with two bel canto titles: Anna Bolena by Donizetti and La gazza ladra by Rossini. Incidentally, Teatro alla Scala had only one production by Donizetti before now, L’elisir d’amore. Taking to the podium for Anna Bolena is Ion Marin in a show with a modern slant, but with period costumes, by Marie-Louise Bischofberger. The very young Federica Lombardi makes her debut in the demanding role of Anna: she is an example of how La Scala continues to invest in the talent emerging from its Academy. Jane Seymour will be played by Sonia Ganassi.

Conductor / Ion Marin
Staging / Marie-Louise Bischofberger

Alfredo Germont / Francesco Meli
Barone Douphol / Costantino Finucci
Marchese D'Obigny / Abramo Rosalen
Dottor Grenvil / Alessandro Spina

NOTES ON THE PERFORMANCES
The staging is the lavish Liliana Cavani production with scenery by Dante Ferretti with which Verdi’s masterpiece returned to La Scala in 1990 conducted by Riccardo Muti. The leading lady is Anna Netrebko, the most highly acclaimed soprano of the present, who has already triumphed in two First Nights at La Scala: on 7 December 2011 in Donna Anna with Daniel Barenboim and in 2015 in Giovanna d’Arco with Riccardo Chailly. Today she has all the necessary maturity to portray the courtesan in all three stages of her passion. She will alternate with Ailyn Perez. The orchestra will be conducted by Nello Santi, a custodian of the most authentic Italian tradition, who has only conducted at La Scala once before, in 1971. Completing a marvellous cast is Francesco Meli as Alfredo and the great Leo Nucci as Giorgio Germont.
