MILAN MELTING POT / Fashion, Films & Fun. Forty-eight years after the release of the film “Blowup” (1966) by Michelangelo Antonioni, undoubtedly the key film in glamourising the world of fashion photography as a profession, followed by other hits like “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) by David Frankel, Milan takes a step forward. Worldwide famous for its gourgeous fashion week, Milan revamps its reputation unveiling a new forum for celebrating fashion films. The first ever Fashion Film Festival Milano will raise the curtain on the city’s Fashion Week this month. Seventy short fashion films, each less than eight minutes long, will be shown in marathon style on September 14th and 15th at the Milan’s iconic Piccolo Grassi Theatre, co-founded by famed director Giorgio Strehler.

Established and directed by Constanza Cavalli Etro with Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana as the main sponsor, Fashion Film Festival Milano - the first international fashion film festival in Italy - will promote a new type of encounter between fashion and cinema, becoming a meeting point for designers, video makers, directors, artists and everyone belonging to the fashion industry, where they can show their work to a national and international audience, providing exposure and business connections. “Fashion week has been somewhat distant from young people. I felt it was appropriate to create an event that puts together fashion and movies, a moment of open congregation targeting young creative talents, bringing them into the world of fashion, flanked by the work of big brands at the same time.Costanza Cavalli Etro said.
Jane Reeve, chief executive officer of the Camera della Moda, Italiana said she “immediately fell in love” with the idea when Cavalli Etro proposed it “It is a gift to the city. The festival responds to my objectives to open up Milan’s fashion week, to make it more international and to support young creative talents. This is a new way to communicate and explore new aesthetic codes, narrative and style. The Camera is increasingly more attentive to the enhancement of the existing connection between fashion and the different languages with which it expresses itself, and we are happy to be part of a project that brings visibility to the rest in the world. Fashion is a combination of many different stimuli and it constantly intersects different industries, from furniture to food. All these impulses redefine fashion.

FASHION FILM FESTIVAL MILANO is made up of two categories that converge in a single showcase: the competition, open to new talents and up-and-coming brands, and the exhibition, containing a selection of the best fashion films made by established brands and directors.
Prizes will then be awarded in the categories of best fashion film, best Italian fashion film, best emerging brand/designer, best director, best styling, best art direction, best editing and best music.  The festival’s closing event will take place on September 22nd at the Triennale museum with a cocktail party for 300 guests with screenings paying tribute to visionaries in fashion filmmaking.
